Hi Cathy
Sadly, this is a extremely under-studied area in PE research.
Alongside the articles already mentioned, you might be interested in this recent perspective from PE trainers:
Qualitative Interviews With Science Communication Trainers About Communication Objectives and Goals
John C. Besley, Anthony D. Dudo, Shupei Yuan, Niveen Abi Ghannam
Science Communication, Vol 38, Issue 3, 2016
http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1075547016645640
Unless the purpose(s) of the PE trainer are aligned with the PE purpose(s) of the researchers, any training intervention is unlikely to be effective. Yet, all too often, in this this field we incorrectly assume everyone is pursuing the same purpose.
All the best
Paul
