*Between Here and Then* showcases the work of 19 doctoral researchers
working within the Centre for Research and Education in the Arts and Media
(CREAM) at the University of Westminster. The exhibition explores the
intersections of artistic practice and theory that lie at the heart of a
practice-based research process. The show provides an opportunity to engage
with works from various disciplines including photography and video work,
ceramic installations, live-feeds, film screenings, discussions, and
performances, all of which culminates with the *CREAM Symposium on 3- 4
July.*
The research-exhibition is presented as a site of critical endeavour, an
‘in-between’ space where identification is vested in a transitory
transformative process and representation is experimental. Adopting a rich
cross-disciplinary approach to arts and media studies the researchers
presenting their work in *Between Here and Then *contest normative
narratives and conventional models of representation.
Responding to the current global political malaise, the works range from
overt political commentaries on migration, marginalisation and colonial
histories to reflexive fictions about notions of home, family and self. The
works on display adopt a variety of media and creative strategies to engage
the audience in a discourse on the poetic as a speculative meaning-making
process. This experimental process is often inscribed in a broader
relational discourse on place and transition. Enriched by references to
archival material, juxtapositions of text and images and multimodal
installations artistic production becomes a site of resistance, provocation
and redefinition.
