Dear all,
As awards officer of the BGA I am looking out for opportunities for geophysicists to
win awards, not necessarily restricted to those offered by the societies to which
the BGA is affiliated. The IoP Holweck medal seems to have been awarded in
the past to researchers in solid-state physics. The criteria are not very clear,
although my interpretation is that experimental work is required.
If you know a geophysicist who is working in this field - perhaps on the physical
properties of deep-mantle materials, or in innovative geophysical sensors -
please do consider putting them forward for this medal. I am a member
of the IoP so I am happy to help. I should also be happy to have suggestions
of other fields of geophysics that might qualify for this medal, so that more
people might be triggered to consider their colleagues for it.
The Holweck medal is awarded in alternate years to British- or Irish-based and
French-based scientists, so if you know someone based in France who might
be a candidate, you can put them forward for the 2019 award.
Deadline is 22nd June 2017.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock.

Dear Dr Peacock,
*2018 IOP Holweck Medal - Call for Nominations*
Nominations are now open for the 2018 IOP Holweck Medal. The award is made in even-dated years to a physicist based in the UK or Ireland.
The award will be made for distinguished work in any aspect of physics that is ongoing or has been carried out within the 10 years preceding the award. In selecting the recipient of the award, the primarily experimental interest of Fernand Holweck will be considered. For more information, including the full terms and previous medalists, please visit the medal webpages <http://iop.msgfocus.com/c/1lXuABFl2jER46KwcF7YNUt>.
This award was instituted in 1945, jointly by the French and British Physical Societies as a memorial to Fernand Holweck, Director of the Curie Laboratory of the Radium Institute in Paris, who was tortured and killed by the Gestapo during the occupation of France 1940-44.
*The deadline for nominations is 22 June 2017*
