From the details I see all I can speculate is that you did not set plumed
paths.
email me the echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
also why do you apply patches?
I have jus build 4.08 without issues. Also I have a patch for 4.08 for plumed
that will make it on 4.09 but you may need it if you plan to run PLUMED option
