‘In Two Places at Once’ is a small-scale, exploratory research project which is investigating the impact of caring responsibilities on academics’ conference attendance. The project takes a broad definition of caring responsibilities, including children and other relatives, partners, pets, friends and kin, and participants span the career spectrum. The study seeks to understand how caring responsibilities intersect with academics’ attendance of and participation in conferences – and whether there are differences for domestic versus international conferences.
Following lunch and introductions, the event begins with a presentation by Dr Marie-Pierre Moreau (Roehampton), who will situate the ‘In Two Places at Once’ project in the wider research on academia and care. Dr Moreau is also a member of the Stakeholder Group for the project. Dr Emily Henderson (University of Warwick, project PI) will then present early findings from the project. This will be followed by responses from some of the members of the Stakeholder Group, which is principally comprised of representatives of academic associations, and a discussion.
The event is organised by Emily Henderson and Julie Mansuy, and is hosted by SRHE (also represented on the Stakeholder Group).
