“Queer” Asia presents the second edition of the annual “Queer” Asia Conference (QA17) to be held at SOAS, University of London from 16th – 18th June, 2017. The aim of the conference is to bring together a wide range of academics and activists working at the intersections of “Queer” and “Asia.” It facilitates an interdisciplinary and inter-regional exchange of ideas, builds enriching networks and stimulates a pan-Asian dialogue on LGBTQ+ issues and struggles in Asia.
The conference focuses on what desire implies for ‘queer’ Asians. What do queers want? How do queers mediate their desires in the face of social opposition, legal persecution, colonial and neo-colonial impositions and accelerating globalisation? How is queer desire negotiated and represented both within Asia and in Asian diasporas? Does decriminalisation necessarily emancipate desire? Have we decolonised our desires? Can we, and how?
QA17 focuses on desire and its intersections with decolonisation and decriminalisation in postcolonial global societies. While SOAS has emerged as a space that nurtures critical thought, racial harmony and fosters cultural exchange we at ‘Queer’ Asia recognise the colonial origins of this institution and are keen on fostering an intellectual engagement with questions on queerness that are worth asking.
