Brian,
I could not agree with you more.
I studied with David Hammond Tooke and Johnny Clegg as tutor in
Johannesburg, before doing my PhD with Jean Rouch, and much of what I
retained, made my own and am practicing today, was transmitted in the
direct contact in class and other situations I had with them, most notably
with Jean Rouch, and especially the ciné-gym course he (with Michel Brault)
asked a member of the Marcel Marceau mime troupe to devise, which was the
basis of his filming practice and has become the basis of mine as well.
It shaped my life and those of many others, today doing fascinating things
all over the world.
Everybody should have the chance to be educated in this manner free of
charge, it is a basic requirement.
Best regards from Paris,
Rina Sherman
