JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:
A doctoral degree (level 10NFQ) in economics, econometrics, biostatistics or a closely related field.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Faculty of Education & Health Sciences (EHS) at the University of Limerick is building research capacity and leadership by creating six new post doctoral researcher positions, each funded initially for three years, in areas of identified research strength across the Faculty. The post doctoral researcher will undertake collaborative and self-directed research on the economic analysis of personalised health interventions. This is a Health Research Board (HRB) Research Leaders programme that is developing and applying methods to evaluate the comparative and cost effectiveness of emerging personalised health or precision medicine therapies. The focus is on investigating better ways of identifying and assessing benefits and costs when therapeutic choices are tailored to reflect individual characteristics of people.
The successful applicant will be expected to
• Apply modern micro-econometric and statistical methods for the analysis of large and complex
data from experimental and non-experimental health studies.
• Collaborate with clinical, health and social scientists to advance the economic analysis of
personalised health and health care.
• Contribute to the Faculty’s research performance by publishing in high quality journals.
• Present research at national and international conferences and workshops.
• Perform research collaboratively and individually.
• Liaise with regional, national and international co-investigators (e.g., NUI-G, UCD, the University
of Oxford and the University of Edinburgh).
• Attract and supervise postgraduate research students at Masters and Doctoral level.
DESCRIPTION:
Essential Criteria (knowledge/experience/skills)
• A doctoral degree (level 10NFQ) in economics, econometrics, biostatistics or a closely related field.
• Broad knowledge of modern econometric and statistical methods.
• Evidence of application of quantitative methods to applied research questions.
• Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies, with specific reference to
analysis of treatment effects.
• Ability to program data analyses in R, Stata or similar software packages.
• Excellent potential to publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
• Promising capacity for obtaining externally funded research income.
Desirable Criteria
• Expertise in modern machine learning methods.
• Expertise in data visualisation.
• Knowledge of the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials.
• Expertise in evidence synthesis.
Personal qualities
• Ability to undertake high-quality health services research.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to communicate economic and statistical concepts to clinical, health and social scientists.
• Ability to work collaboratively with the HSE and other external organisations.
• Commitment to team-working with respect for the skills of others.
• Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Excellent time-management and organisational skills.
