Hi Folks,
can anyone point me to any details in BS8300 that might allow square handrails or a handrail that is set into a wall please?
A large project locally has gone ahead with some consultation at the early planning and design stages but then excluding interested parties and, once we were allowed in to the finished building it has produced some access anomalies, one of which is the handrails that I think are problematic.
I have found reference to flatter profile handrails but it seems to me that this is meant to describe oval rather than square rails. The BS also talks about a 15mm minimum radius corner but these seem almost exactly square to me.
The recessed rails are I think even worse because they are almost invisible. They have installed LED lights inside the recess but instead of finding a handrail extending from the wall there is just a lighted slot running up the wall and if you do realise it is supposed to be a rail and insert your fingers there is nowhere to curl your fingers or thumb so it only gives vertical support.
The project lead is insisting that both square rails and inset rails are supported by ADM and the British Standards and I would like to be sure before I officially challenge this.
Many thanks,
Vin
