Hi Teresa,
I'm not sure whether our neonatologists use the results from our FreeStyle Precision Pro blood glucose meters or from our GEM Premier 5000 blood gas analysers as they have access to both. Our post-natal wards also have access to the GEMs anyway for point of care bilirubin measurement so it wouldn't be too much of an issue here. (Except the cost of a blood gas analyser glucose in comparison to a blood glucose meter one of course!)
Kind regards,
Kerry

Subject: Neonatal Hypoglycaemia
Can I ask if following the British Association of Perinatal Medicine publication "Identification and Management of Neonatal Hypoglycaemia in the Full Term Infant – A Framework for Practice" you have been asked to provide gas analysers for glucose measurement rather than glucose meters?
The paper concludes:
In summary, analysis of plasma glucose equivalent using a blood gas machine provides a rapid and accurate measurement of neonatal blood glucose to support real-time clinical decisions. Consideration should be given to providing access to this ward based technology in all clinical settings where newborn infants are looked after.
We don't have a BGA on all wards where newborn infants are looked after and our consultants are asking what other Trusts do?
