Title: “Creative reconstruction” and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games
Abstract: This talk looks forward to the next Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and critically examines the vision of Japanese society expressed in the idea of an ‘Olympic legacy’ for Tokyo 2020. The presentation focuses on the concept of "creative reconstruction" used repeatedly by the Japanese government after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011.
About the speakers:
Professor Yoshifusa Ichii is Professor of Sociology in the College of Social Sciences at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan. His research interests include sports mega-events, lifestyle sports, leisure and social theory. He is currently on sabbatical in the UK, based at the University of Central Lancashire, and is carrying out research into sociological aspects of the Olympic Games in London 2012 and Tokyo 2020.
Professor John Horne is Professor of Sport and Sociology in the School of Sport and Wellbeing at the University of Central Lancashire, and currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the British Sociological Association and Vice-President of the International Sociology of Sport Association.
