MRes (Masters in Research) Studentship - Midwifery

Robert Gordon University - School of Nursing & Midwifery
Qualification type: MRes
Location: Aberdeen

Closes: Wed 31st May
Interviews: Monday 12th June

School of Nursing & Midwifery
Funding amount: £15,000 maintenance grant
Lead Supervisor name: Professor Susan Crowther

The School of Nursing and Midwifery at Robert Gordon University working in partnership with NHS Grampian is offering a Funded MRes Studentship. To apply for this Studentship you must be a registered Midwife or allied health care professional and eligible to practice (UK).

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has two overarching research themes;
Person, Family and Community Focussed Health and Wellbeing and Organisation and Delivery of Health and Social Care/Services. This MRes opportunity will be aligned with the research grouping 'Maternal, family and child wellbeing'.

We would welcome proposals related to the recommendation of 'The Best Start - Maternity and Neonatal Review' (Scottish Government, 2017), for example,

· Implementation and sustainability of Continuity of Carer in midwifery (e.g. sustainable caseloading across NHS Grampian)

· Studies related to rural and remote maternity services

· Integrative team working in maternity care provision, (e.g. employing inter-professional education)

· Community Midwifery Units and adoption of community hubs (e.g. choice of place of birth, keeping maternity care local, sustainable staffing of these units)
With the publication of The Best Start - maternity and neonatal review early 2017 containing over 70 recommendations it is imperative that research, service evaluation and audit is embedded as the changes take place across services. The proposed MRes project seeks to examine how these recommendations will be implemented in sustainable ways across the NHS Grampian region. The purpose of this MRes studentship is therefore to explore new ways of working with the aim of proactively contributing to the transformation of NHS Grampian maternity services.

Please return your completed application form attaching the following:
* Your research proposal (maximum 4 pages)
* Two academic references

The successful candidate will be expected to work full time on the MRes research study but can spend up to one day per week either in clinical practice or in an educational setting. The Studentship is for one year, which will begin in September 2017. You will be supported by a £15,000 stipend and an additional sum to support training and development costs during the Studentship.

This is an exciting opportunity and will enable an aspiring individual to combine clinical practice with a research role, working across the University and NHS Grampian. You will work with supervisors drawn from both academic and clinical institutions in a tri-partite arrangement, and will have access to a wide range of resources to support the project. Formal training in research skills, such as interviewing and observation, will be provided by Robert Gordon University with personal development through academic supervisors. You will be part of a large body of postgraduate research students in the University with access to Postgraduate lectures and support sessions.

Interviews will be held at Robert Gordon on Monday 12th June

What does the funded studentship include?
Funded candidates will receive a maintenance grant of £15,000, to cover their living expenses and have their fees waived for 12 months. In addition, research costs, including field work and conference attendance, will be met.

Funded Studentships are open to candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility criteria
Candidates for funded MRes studentship must demonstrate outstanding qualities and be motivated to complete an MRes in 1 year.

All candidates must satisfy the University's minimum MRes entry criteria for studentships of an honours degree at Upper Second Class (2.1). An IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum (or equivalent) is essential for candidates for whom English is not their first language.

Closing date: The first call for applications will close on Wed 31st May
