3rd Workshop on Second Language Prosody. Bangor, Gwynedd, United Kingdom. 9-10 November 2017.
Call for Papers
Following the success of the 2016 workshop on Second Language Prosody (SLaP) at the University of Graz, we are delighted to announce that the 3rd SLaP workshop will take place in Bangor, on 9th and 10th November 2017. The 1.5-day event aims to promote research into prosodic aspects of second language speech learning, and is preceded by the half-day methods workshop Prosody Online: Open source software in comprehension & production research.
The third workshop on Second Language Prosody aims to cover a range of research concerned with prosody and bilingualism. We particularly welcome papers addressing how prosody differs across languages; how such differences are produced and perceived by speakers who have access to two (or more) languages; and how prosody may be lost or broken down in conditions of attrition. We also encourage papers concerned with identifying the factors that promote or inhibit the occurrence of L1 and/or L2 influences on prosody.
Abstract submission guidelines: We invite the submission of proposals for presentations and posters. Abstracts should be no more than 400 words. As reviewing will be blind, the paper should not include the authors' names and affiliations. Each abstract should be submitted as a PDF file. Please submit your abstract through EasyAbs at: http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/SLaP2017. Abstract submission will open on 1st May 2017 and the submission deadline is 31st July 2017. For any questions, please contact the conference organisers at SLaP3 AT bangor.ac.uk.

The workshop will be organized by the DFG research unit ''Questions at the Interfaces'' in the Department of Linguistics, University of Konstanz.
Invited speakers:
Daniel Büring
Sonia Frota
Elsi Kaiser
Oliver Niebuhr

Vowel Reduction and its Phonological Consequences. Zurich, Switzerland.
10-13 September 2017.
Call for Papers:
This workshop aims to address the issues listed in the conference description. We especially invite papers which interrogate vowel reduction phenomena in a cross-linguistic and general theoretical perspective. The topics include:
- The phonetic causes and mechanisms for vowel reduction and loss;
- The phonological contexts in which it is most likely to occur;
- Its typical and atypical trajectories of vowel reduction;
- Typological, areal, diachronic explanations for the cross-linguistic distribution of reduction;
- Asymmetries in the reduction of vowels of different qualities;
- Perception and categorisation of reduced vowels by L1 and L2 speakers;
- Challenges for the description of languages with an ongoing reduction;
- The consequences of vowel reduction and loss for phonology and morphophonology.
Preliminary abstracts (DOC and/or PDF, max. 300 words excluding references) for 20 minute talks should be sent via email to both workshop organizers by November 20 (cormacanderson AT gmail.com, nkuzn AT yandex.ru).

Workshop: Conversational speech and lexical representations
Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands
June 8-9, 2017
This workshop closes two large-scale research projects on the comprehension of reduced word pronunciation variants (e.g. yeshay for yesterday) in conversational speech by both native and non-native listeners. These projects led to intriguing insights (that the hosts will present during the workshop), also concerning the nature of spoken word mental representations. At the same time, the projects raised new questions, especially regarding the interaction between memory traces and speech perception processes. Our speakers will share their take on these issues in plenary talks, and engage in workshop-wide discussions with all participants.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Louis ten Bosch (Radboud University)
- Audrey Bürki (University of Postdam)
- Lisa Davidson (New York University)
- Gareth Gaskell (University of York)
- Effie Kapnoula (Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language)
- Connor T. McLennan (Cleveland State University)
- Mark Pitt (Ohio State University)
- Antje Schweitzer (University of Stuttgart)
- Miguel Simonet (University of Arizona)
- Matthias Sjerps (Radboud University)
- Atsuko Takashima (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics)
- Benjamin V. Tucker (University of Alberta)
- Natasha Warner (University of Arizona)
