Dear Critters,
As a culmination of an AHRC-ICHR funded project on utopian cities (PIs-
Ayona Datta, Anu Sabhlok), we are planning a curated photo exhibition -
the intention is to take further the dialogue on alternative Utopias.
Please see call for enteries below and spread the word widely!
Looking forward to many critters sending in their images of alternative,
grounds up, subaltern visions of Utopia.
See details below. Also, attached is a poster - submissions from students
are highly encouraged.
Best,
Anu
Curated show '(Un)framing Utopias in the Urban' at the Urban Futures
Research Domain, Kings College London.
(Un)framing Utopias in the Urban
A call for photographic ideas!
'The Future is a Cultural Fact." (Appadurai, 2015)
The history of urban planning is a history of urban utopias. Ebenezer
Howard's Garden City, Frank Lloyd Wrights Broadacre City, Le Corbusier's
Radiant City and Richard Register's Eco city all provide fertile ground
for examining both the imageries, visions and realities of modern urban
planning. These 'blueprint cities' have
received substantial attention by urban researchers, architects, planners
and governments. What remains less visible are the imaginations,
perceptions and utopian visions of those that inhabit city spaces - as
residents, migrants, children, tourists, non-human lives.....In this
curated show we hope to touch upon that liminal space that lies between
the abstract and lived. We hope to capture the dialectic between form and
process, between built space and lived experience: to examine the
histories, imaginations and possibilities of alternative urban utopias.
How do the aspirations and dreams of urban residents materialize in space
or in what ways do they sneak out amidst the cacophony of bureaucratic,
professional and administrative interpretations of space? How does urban
space speak to you - revealing your inner imaginations and visions of the
city and its experience? What can visual interpretations of the Utopian
city unveil that might remain concealed within the written
discourse?
Artists, scholars and photographers are encouraged to interpret this theme
broadly and participate in this dialogue on the Urban Utopian through a
visual lens. All visual media and genres are welcome - traditional
photography, digital collage, mixed-media photo art or other alternative
processes. The images will be selected by an interdisciplinary and
international jury for their ability to enrich, trouble, complicate
and/or deepen the
discussion on Urban Utopias.
Selected images will be exhibited at Kings College, London and a printed
catalogue connecting the themes that emerge will be produced. This
exhibition marks the culmination of the AHRC-ICHR funded project titled:
‘Learning from the Utopian City: an international network on alternative
histories of urban futures.’ This exhibition is funded by AHRC. For more
information on the project follow us on: www.utopiancities.wordpress.com
Entries should be emailed to [log in to unmask] The images should be
minimum resolution (4960 x 3508 pixels) for a minimum print size of 11 x
17 inches. They should be accompanied by a title, description (size,
medium etc.) and a few words (150 max) outlining the art works engagement
with the Utopian Urban.
