Dear List,
This query made me think of a former coal gas production facility we have worked on where reports confirm that a "C.R.G. Plant operated by reforming steam and light distillate oil fraction over a catalyst of high nickel content to give a gas rich in methane. A number of different types of nickel catalyst were routinely used and in rare cases, the nickel catalysts contained approximately 10% depleted uranium oxide and 25% nickel oxide. The catalyst was contained in a ceramic matrix, shaped into small pellets and cylinders of height and diameter of approximately 1.5 cm. These catalysts are usually bright blue or green when used in town gas production (due to gas impurities), but can also be black, grey or white. The stacking of the catalyst required the use of spacers. The spacers were made from a coarse ceramic material. These were also cylindrical but slightly larger than the catalyst pellets. They are generally white or grey in appearance although following use they are often found to be coloured Prussian blue and/or green".

Subject: Another Friday mystery object
Dear List
Does anybody know what this is?
It is a small ceramic cylinder (one of many found across the site), approximately 6cm long and 3cm diameter with a 1cm hole through its length. It, and its many friends, were stained light blue. The site was a former gasworks (c.1930s-1980s) but has been subject to considerable infilling (1980s), so the origin of the fill material is not clear.
I have already received an opinion from our esteemed gasworks expert (Thank you, Russell) but I wonder whether anybody else has any ideas or has come across similar on another site.
As ever your comments and observations are welcome.
