Well if they were in or near Stoke on Trent I would say possibly risers or is it raisers?, blocks used to hold up pottery and such in kilns to allow air to flow round. They are (not surprisingly) usually made of pottery and come in all shapes and sizes, but open cylinders appear to be the most common in my experience. Found thousands of them alongside some broken teapots on a school in Stoke some years ago. That was an interesting one to do a percolation test on....
