Inaugural Executive Functioning in Children Conference
Connections in Mind (www.connectionsinmind.co.uk) is hosting its inaugural conference to discuss how we can better support students with executive function challenges.
Overview
Children and young people with executive skills challenges are often bright and able, but just can’t manage their daily lives. These children are often seen as lazy and unmotivated and adults become increasingly frustrated by their apparent difficulty in doing the ‘basic things’ in life. Problems with task initiation, time management, planning and organisation, shifting and task monitoring can have a significant impact both academically and behaviourally. The result can be a young person who is isolated from adults around them and achieving well below their potential in school. Connections in Mind is devoted to identifying and training executive skills in children and young people by working with children themselves, parents and teachers.
Peg Dawson, leading expert in this field with over 25 years experience of working with people training executive skills and having authored the leading books on the topic, will be giving a keynote address. Joining her is Laurie Faith who is leading some ground-breaking initiatives in education, who will demonstrate how to embed an EF-based reflective discourse in daily feedback in schools. Bettina Hohnen, Victoria Bagnall and Imogen Moore, who started Connections in Mind will be leading workshops and discussions with delegates to apply knowledge learned from this work to the UK setting. It is an opportunity to be part of this exciting new movement in the UK to understand children better and find ways to improve relationships and achievement for all.
We would like to invite those working with children with these challenges to join us to listen and discuss these important issues in relation to children in the UK. This will be of interest to psychologists, teachers and SENCOs working with children of school age.
