Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties
This post is part of an innovative project to examine how best to use ethnographic observation and video feedback to improve patient safety in Acute Medical Units (AMUs). The project will examine the feasibility and implementation of video reflexive ethnography (VRE), which combines observation of how clinical teams work with video to feedback positive and negative lessons to help them work together more effectively within the high-pressure, safety-critical environment of the AMU. You will lead the video reflexive ethnographic fieldwork for the project with full training and support from the other members of the research team. The principal investigator is Dr Suzanne Grant (who is a Lecturer in Medical Anthropology), and you will also work closely with Professor Bruce Guthrie (a GP and mixed methods health services researcher based at the University of Dundee) and Dr Jessica Mesman (a science and technology studies specialist based at Maastricht University and a world-leader in video-reflexive ethnography (VRE)). You will be based in the Population Health Sciences (PHS) Division in the Medical School at Ninewells Hospital, and will become a member of the Quality, Safety and Informatics (QSI) Research Group, which is a multidisciplinary group of researchers interested in improving healthcare quality and safety, often with the use of innovative informatics. PHS and QSI provide a rich academic environment with opportunities for collaboration, and we encourage staff to undertake continuous professional development to enhance their skills and expertise and to collaborate with others in the group on their own or other projects if desired. We expect all researchers to be involved in publication, and to be first author if they draft the paper.
