*and Islamic Militancy the Western Saharan Region*

(European Research Council STG-716467-2016),

hosted by the Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia (CRIA),

Lisbon, Portugal (http://cria.org.pt/wp/en/

*Project:* CAPSAHARA proposes an analysis of the reconfigurations
established in the socio-political vocabulary of the western Saharan region
from the “post-empire” to the contemporary period. The project should
produce an analysis of the social and political structures shared in the
region, of the local variations of those structures (based on case
studies), their specific configurations based on social markers such as
gender, age, and class; in order to understand the recent articulation of
the region’s social and political structures with broader and often
exogenous political vocabularies. The project’s results should enable the
different contexts under study to be integrated into the wider maps of
current scientific research, providing, at the same time a dissemination of
its outputs to an extended audience. The project is methodologically based
on readings associated with different social sciences, with a particular
focus on anthropology.

*Scientific Area: *Anthropology

*Admission requirements*: Master degree in Anthropology (outstanding CVs
from other Social Sciences or Humanities might also be evaluated); interest
in carrying-out field research in the extended Western Saharan Region;
theoretical attention to questions of race, social status and “tribal”
formations; language skills in English, Arabic, and French.

*Work Plan: Candidates must provide a synthetic work plan for their
envisaged research *on the Western Saharan region (in one of the project’s
research locations: Souss-Massa-Drâa region, Tindouf, and the Trarza and
Adrar regions of Mauritania), focusing on the project’s scientific
proposal: adaptation from a nomadic life style to a state-centered
political structure; in-depth analysis of the pervasiveness (or not) of the
hassanophone social markers; the current role of religious status groups.
Researchers are also expected to produce significant scientific outputs for
international publication, and to fully participate in CRIA’s activities.

*Applicable laws and regulations (activity basis):* The grant is regulated
by the Law 40/2004, August 18 (Research Fellowship Holder Statute -

).

*Duration: *12 months, due to start in June 2017. The fellowship contract
may be renewed, upon positive evaluation, with a possibility for an
extension until the end of the project.

*Workplace**:* The work will be developed at CRIA-FCSH/Nova, Lisboa, under
the supervision of Dr. Francisco Freire.

*Amount**: *Monthly stipend of 980 euros (tax free), plus personal
insurance and voluntary social security. Complementary benefits include
publication fees, travel and subsidized participation in academic meetings.

*Selection methods: *CV (60%), work plan (40%). If deemed necessary the
panel will interview the candidates, in which case the evaluation shall be
based on CV+work plan (80%) and interview (20%). The panel may decide not
to assign all the fellowships.

*Selection Panel**: *F*rancisco Freire (chair), Maria Cardeira da Silva,
Antónia Pedroso de Lima*

*Advertising/notification of results: *The final evaluation results will be
