CALL FOR ABSTRACTS FOR THE BRITISH JOURNAL OF SOCIAL WORK 2018 SPECIAL ISSUE
Co-editors: Dr Hannah Bows (Teesside University) and Bridget Penhale (University of East Anglia)
Title: Elder Abuse and Social Work: Research, Theory and Practice
Rationale: There has been a growing interest in abuse of older people (often referred to as ‘elder abuse’) particularly over the last two decades. Most of the research has emerged from outside of the UK, although there has been a steady increase in research examining the prevalence and issues associated with elder abuse in the UK over the last ten years. However, there are significant gaps in research in relation to care homes (Moore, 2016) and minority ethnic groups (Manthorpe and Bowes, 2010). Moreover, certain types of abuse, particularly sexual abuse, have received very little attention from researchers (Bows and Westmarland, 2015; Jones and Powell, 2006). Furthermore, although there have been calls to examine abuse of older people using life course and/or feminist theoretical frameworks (as there are clear definitional and operational overlaps between domestic violence and elder abuse) (McDonald and Thomas, 2013; Whittaker, 1995; Jones and Powell, 2006) elder abuse remains under-theorised.
As the majority of service users in contact with the adult social care sector are older people, it is very likely that social workers in adult social care and health care settings come in contact with victims and perpetrators of elder abuse. They therefore require up-to-date knowledge and evidence to inform their practice, which will be provided by this special issue.
This special issue is devoted to examining the development of research, theory, policy and practice internationally in relation to elder abuse and domestic violence affecting older populations. This special issue encourages interdisciplinary papers, particularly where there are implications or recommendations for social work practice in collaboration with other disciplines or fields.
Aim(s): to examine the current state of research, policy and practice in relation to elder abuse and to consider the implications and potential further developments in relation to these areas (specifically the fields of social work and inter-agency practice and research).
