The family next door chatters over the fence as a tinny version of the *Last
Post* plays under their words. Under backyard fruit trees green parrots
peck away and of a sudden at a secret signal fly off in formation. High in
the giant eucalyptus beside the railway line a pigeon coos. This is a day
of remembrance for our nation, for all the dead and maimed of two world
wars and other deadly actions. It is hard to imagine the noise of battle as
the birds twit and swoop from tree to tree. A Hills Hoist display of
colourful civilian clothes sways in a breeze as a train hurtles by from
foothills to footy. The supporters wear their scarves even though it’s a
warm day, and chatter at the gate about last year’s game and that last kick
for goal on the siren. Lest we forget.
