The Survey of London and South-East Marylebone
In October this year Yale University Press will publish the 51st and 52nd volumes in the renowned Survey of London series, on South-East Marylebone.
Colin Thom, Senior Research Associate with the Survey, will describe the area of St Marylebone covered by these latest volumes. Historically and architecturally, it is an area of extraordinary richness and variety, resonant with famous names and associations, from the Adam brothers' Portland Place and Nash's Park Crescent to the medical specialists of Harley and Wimpole Streets, the artists and craftsmen of Berners and Newman Streets and the motor-traders of Great Portland Street. Individual set-pieces include Nash's All Souls, Langham Place; Butterfield's ecclesiological masterpiece All Saints, Margaret Street; the BBC's Broadcasting House; and the 1960s Brutalist campuses of the University of Westminster.
The talk will also look briefly at the methodology used by the Survey in its study and some of the challenges presented by the area, and there will be a summary of other current projects and the Survey's new teaching role as part of the Bartlett School of Architecture's Research Department at UCL.
