**CALL FOR PAPERS**
Christian Collectivities Workshop – May 19th, 2017, UCL Anthropology Department
Dear group members,
The UCL Anthropology of Christianity Reading and Research Group is pleased to invite contributions for an upcoming workshop on the theme of ‘Christian Collectivities’, to be held at UCL on May 19th, 2017.
We invite papers that engage with any aspect of ‘identity’ formation (and/or its dismissal) among Christian groups; Christianity’s relationship to the state; perceptions of difference (and/or similarity) from non-Christian communities, neighbours, and Others; Christian communal living and intentional communities (and/or their rejection); concepts of Christian national or cultural heritage (and disputes over these Christian legacies), etc.
This broad theme has been chosen to accommodate the range of geographic and theoretical interests currently represented by our members, who are working on such diverse topics as Buddhist-Christian interactions in Burma/Myanmar; neo-monastics in the northwestern United States; gender relations in Catholic Ireland; congregational structure in Tanzania; and liberal Protestant aesthetics in the United Kingdom. The theme also speaks to significant debates ongoing in the anthropology of Christianity, particularly the relationship between (secular) society and the (Christian) individual, and longstanding theo-social debates concerning the possibility and/or desirability of a Christian ‘nation’.
The workshop will feature a number of short presentations (25 minutes in length), followed by an address by Dr Tom Boylston of the University of Edinburgh, who will be speaking to the theme as it relates to his work on the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
The Christianity RRG has long functioned as a space for research students and early career scholars to discuss their work in progress in a friendly, collegiate environment. As such, we are particularly keen for postgraduate students – including Masters students and pre- and post-field PhD candidates – and recent PhDs to submit papers for consideration.
To be considered for inclusion, please send the title of your paper and a 200 word abstract to BOTH Reading Group conveners, Katharine Fletcher ([log in to unmask]) and Méadhbh McIvor ([log in to unmask]), by Friday, 28th April, 2017. We hope to be able to finalise the workshop programme by 1st May.
Please forward this message to anyone who may be interested!
With best wishes,
Katharine & Méadhbh
