Dear Colleagues,
This is last minute call for submissions to a panel Paolo Favero and I are organising for AAA. We have had two people cancel at the last minute due to personal issues, so have two slots open. Pease see the panel description below. If any of you are interested in contributing, please send an abstract to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] as soon as possible.
Due to the AAA submission regulations, anyone wanting to take part in the panel will need to register and pay for the conference before the 14th April. Please only send an abstract if you are committed to attending the conference.
Thanks in advance,

Exploring emergent image-based participatory technologies in visual anthropology.
Abstract
Visual anthropology is today getting refashioned in the confluence of increasingly affordable and high quality amateur film techniques, of emerging digital technologies, and new multimodal participatory techniques. Contemporary imaging technologies offer tempting opportunities to extend the boundaries of visual aesthetics, to challenge dominant understandings of visual culture, to move beyond a narrow understanding of the visual by interpellating the role of all the senses in the integrated act of vision.
Visual anthropologists have already begun exploring the potential of new visual technologies such as 3D video, virtual and augmented reality media, challenging the methods through which ethnographic filmmaking is conventionally carried out and questioning conventional assumptions regarding how visual ethnographic evidence is received by our audiences. On top of this, by engaging with low cost, mobile phone-based technologies contemporary visual technologies have enlarged the terrain of participation, giving birth to new approaches and methods.
This panel seeks to explore the possible consequences of the incorporation of such technologies in the context of making (multimodal) visual ethnographies. What new insights do we get by engaging with omni-directional, virtual reality and augmented reality? Are such practices leading to a rethinking of the idea of participatory methods? What are the core ethical dilemmas that we are faced with in this context? We invite scholars (from anthropology but also allied disciplines) who actively engage with participatory visual methods and emerging technologies in a variety of different contexts. We are especially interested in those scholars who may attempt to represent and capture aspects of visual culture in settings where access to virtual imaging technologies and expertise is uncommon. What are the practical, ethical, and artistic challenges of using new visual technologies when these technologies have been designed with other purposes in mind? Can a non-technocentric visual aesthetics be forged through anthropological practices using new imaging technologies in collaboration with the individuals and groups whom with we study? Do visual technologies, their challenges and most importantly their expressive potential call for yet another "re-thinking" of visual anthropology?
