Le monde globalisé d’aujourd’hui multiplie les possibilités de rencontre entre les individus et les objets, tant au niveau matériel qu’au niveau immatériel. La multiplication de ces rencontres amène les individus à questionner leurs identités personnelle, sociale, nationale, culturelle, religieuse, sexuelle et politique, pour ne mentionner que celles-là, ainsi que le sens des notions de communauté, de travail, et d’appartenance à des lieux et des espaces. Changeant continuellement de forme, cette amplification des possibilités de rencontre entre les individus et les objets matériels et immatériels offre des opportunités de vivre des expériences inédites. Comme un « flâneur » dans les centres commerciaux, l’individu mondialisé semble être constamment en attente de stimuli continuels bien souvent intangibles. Alors qu’elles procurent un sentiment immédiat de contrôle et de sécurité, ces « rencontres » se révèlent, en pratique, fragiles, éphémères et précaires, bien qu’ayant un caractère pérenne d’un point de vue structurel. Dès l’instant où une « forme » (ou une « catégorie ») créée à travers ces contacts commence à circuler dans la sphère publique en tant que discours légitime, se pose la question de la correspondance entre la forme première, « pérenne », de représentation et la dynamique « précaire » des pratiques.

Cette contradiction, peut-être plus tangible dans les domaines privilégiés par la mondialisation, conforte notre hypothèse selon laquelle la dialectique « précarité/pérennité » inhérente aux rencontres contemporaines se manifeste également, sous des formes différentes, dans les zones marginales de la mondialisation. Quels sont les enjeux des deux faces de la mondialisation (centrale et marginalisée) qui contribuent au débat actuel à propos des rencontres et quelles sont leurs conséquences sur les représentations des hommes et des choses ? Dans cette perspective, il est légitime de s’interroger sur la nature des distinctions et/ou des accords formels et sémantiques entre les créations, artistiques et académiques, du monde globalisé d’aujourd’hui. Un tel contexte d’échanges généralisé pourrait favoriser la création de nouvelles représentations, ajustées au temps présent, qui interrogent les formes précédentes, et particulièrement ici la notion classique d’individu, de communauté, de corps, de travail, de lieu et d’espace.

Nous aimerions ainsi aborder, au cours de ces journées d’études,  ce thème sous un angle à la fois académique et artistique. Comment, en effet, les artistes et les chercheurs interprètent les rencontres contemporaines dans un monde en mouvement continu? A quel niveau les réflexions sur les rencontres suscitées par la mondialisation nous permettent-elles une compréhension plus approfondie des dynamiques contemporaines? Il nous semble important de souligner la fécondité heuristique d’une telle approche, qui pourrait constituer une bonne entrée en matière pour appréhender les « frictions » (cf. Tsing) des sociétés contemporaines, à travers la variation des situations de rencontre induites par ce phénomène global. En d’autres termes, la notion de « rencontre globale » peut être employée comme un concept analytique fécond pour une meilleure approche de la complexité des rencontres entre les communautés mises en contact?

Dans la perspective de ces questionnements, nous invitons des artistes et des chercheurs à engager une réflexion approfondie sur les manières dont se manifestent les logiques de confrontation dans les zones de frontières globales. Nous apprécierons les propositions capables d’apporter un éclairage sur les aspects positifs et négatifs de ces rencontres contemporaines, à travers des exemples issus à la fois des centres et des périphéries de la mondialisation.

Les propositions de 350 mots (en français ou en anglais) sont attendues pour le 15 avril 2017. Les participants retenus devront envoyer leur proposition complète au plus tard le 15 juin 2017.

More then ever, the contemporary globalised world offers possibilities of encounters between individuals and things at a both material and immaterial level. The multiplication of these encounters leads individuals to question their personal, social, national, cultural, religious, sexual and political identities (to mention a few) and sense of community, labour and belonging to places and spaces. By constantly taking different forms, the amplification of possibilities of encounters between people and material and immaterial things leads individuals towards new experiences. Like browsers in shopping malls, the globalised individual expects to be easily aroused and instantly gratified through the ‘accumulation’ of human/non-human encounters. While guaranteeing a rapid, if temporary, sense of control and security these encounters are fragile, ephemeral and precarious in practice and yet enduring at a structural level. By the time the ‘form’ (or ‘category’) created through these encounters starts to circulate in the public sphere as a legitimate discourse, the question about the correspondence between the previous, “perennial” form of representation and the “precarious” dynamic of actual encounters also emerges.

If this contradiction may be more tangible in central zones of globalisation (which by and large affects western societies), our hypothesis is that the problematic concerning ‘precarious’ vs. ‘perennial’ forms of representation, inherited of the contemporary encounters, are also manifested in the marginal zones of globalisation. Thus, what are the repercussions of these two sides of globalisation to a growing debate about contemporary encounters and their effect on the human/non-human representation? In order to question the formal and semantic similarities and differences of the contemporary globalised world, we believe it is important to take into account both artistic and academic perspectives. A context of multiple interactions can indeed foster the creation of new forms of representations (adjusted for the contemporary time) that precisely question the previous form, and more specifically the classic notion of individual, community, body, labour, place and space. Both artists and academics respond and/or participate to these new creations.

Accordingly, for this symposium, we would like to reflect on this theme from both an academic and artistic perspective. How do artists and social scientists respond to the contemporary world in continuous movement? To what extent do reflections about contemporary encounters help us to better understand global dynamics? We believe that emphasising this approach will be a fertile way to grasp the ‘frictions’ (cf. Tsing) of contemporary societies in their diverse globalised dimensions. In other words, can the notion of ‘global encounter’ be used as a constructive analytical concept to better grasp the complexities of encounters between communities placed in contact with each other?

In line with these sets of questions, we invite proposals from artists and academics to reflect around the modalities in which the logic of confrontations are approached in the areas of globalised boarders. We would appreciate propositions able to highlight positive and negative aspects on these contemporary encounters bringing examples coming from both the centre and the periphery of globalisation.

Abstracts of 350 words (in French or English) must be sent by 15 April 2017. The selected participants will be asked to send complete papers by 15 June 2017.
