Fantasies, Anxiety, Difference – The figure of the other in the aftermaths of a violent political transformation

This panel is interested in the inscriptions of difference in the everyday after a violent political transformation. It seeks to understand how in intimate spaces, urban spheres and in nation-state projects the figure of the other becomes articulated and is at the same time haunted by its legacies. It aims to understand how these forces, infrastructures (Simone 2004), national fantasies (Berlant 2011) and atmospheric attunements (Stewart 2010) are incorporated and performed in the everyday. How does one appear different and become marked as other?
 
It seeks to investigate in what ways the processes of alterity contradict a nation’s promise (such as the surge for “pluralism/diversity”, “harmony”, “order”, “peace”, “unity”, “prosperity/progress”, “liberation”, “democracy”); and how it becomes a paradox within its very own logics and margins. What becomes then the otherness of the other? Which forms of domination, time-spaces and images are mobilized to create a project to encounter a violent legacy? What are the foundations (erasures and counter discourses) of these projects and what are the formulated promises? How do then attachments and affects emerge in the day-to-day life? How do things and objects become habitable and uninhabitable (Simone 2016, Stewart 2010) in these formations? What are the ways in which a figurine emerges, that is marked as foreign and how are these acts translated and repeated in national, urban and/or intimate contexts?
 
This panel attempts to scrutinize through thick ethnographic explorations and theoretical contributions states of exception, states in transformations, states in ordinary crisis, infrastructures as well as the production of (national) fantasies and processes of difference (that may be fostered through gender, ethnic/race or religious marks).

Presenters are responsible for submitting the second set: their own individual abstracts (of no more than 250 words), paper title and keywords. Organizers are NOT able to upload individual abstracts on behalf of presenters on the panel. Presenters must be current members unless eligible for a membership exemption (anthropologists living outside of the US/Canada or non-anthropologists) and have paid registration for the 2017 Annual Meeting in order to upload abstract information. Presenters must submit this information by Friday, April 14, 2017 at 5pm EDT.
