2017 Florence Hilda Yates Scholarships at the International Centre for Music Studies, Newcastle University (full fees scholarship for Masters Research programmes)
Newcastle University is pleased to invite applications for two fees-only Florence Hilda Yates Scholarships based in the International Centre for Music Studies, Newcastle University.
These scholarships cover all fees at the Home rate for two students starting the MMus or MLitt research programmes in Music in September 2017. If the scholarship is held by an overseas student, the holder will be responsible for paying the balance between the home/EU fees and the overseas fees rate.
Overview
As one of the UK’s larger music departments, The International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University sustains a distinctive and plural research culture. We are seeking candidates of the highest calibre in any of our areas of research strength which include:
¥ Early music
¥ Ethnomusicology and traditional musics
¥ Critical and cultural musicology
¥ Composition (broadly defined)
¥ Performance

Eligibility Criteria
UK, EU and International students are eligible to apply.
You should hold, or expect to achieve, a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent, in music or a closely related discipline.
We welcome applications from all sections of the community regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and wish to encourage applications from traditionally underrepresented groups in UK higher education.
International students
If your first language is not English you need IELTS 6.5 overall (with 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills) or equivalent.
How to apply
To be considered for a scholarship you will need to apply for the MLitt or MMus through the University’s online postgraduate application form:
¥ In the Programme of Study section, you will need to insert the relevant course code. Either MMus 5811F (full time) / 5811P (part time) or MLitt 7802F (full time) /7802P (part time)
¥ Select the programme
¥ Insert the scholarship code mus01 in the studentship/partnership reference field
¥ Provide two references (including predictions for the outcomes of degrees not yet completed).
Applicants must attach the following to their application:
¥ A research proposal of no more than 750 words for the major research project to be pursued during the Masters programme, outlining:
1) the research questions your project will address
2) the research context (i.e. current state of the research within the field or discipline)
3) the methods you plan to use to address the research questions.
¥ A 400 word personal statement outlining:
1) your preparedness to undertake the proposed research
2) how the proposed research will prepare you either for future doctoral research or in terms of professional development.
