Reading some recent posts here, I was reminded of Barry Wellman's short article on why the SPSS manual might be sociology's most influential book. (Well, in 1998 anyway - now it might be Hadley Wickham's ggplot2!). I've attached it, because I think it touches on many issues that remain current in relation to the use of programming languages and packages in social science practice.
