Please find below programme and registration details for the following research seminar as part of the Creative Methods in Health and Wellbeing Seminar Series:
EXPLORING SENSORY AND MATERIAL METHODOLOGIES
5 May 2017, 10am-5pm ESGW 402, Brunel University London
This seminar explores contemporary approaches around material, sensory and creative methods. In particular we explore the use of material methodologies - focusing on objects and materiality associated with urban living and wellbeing, and sensory methodologies - focusing on embodied being in the world, highlighting the contested nature of the senses.
Presentations and discussion will reflect on the challenges involved in working with materiality and the senses in relation to different bodies and the ephemeral nature of the social.
The day will comprise 3 paper sessions on the Body and Vulnerability, Everyday Material and Sensory Connections, and the Material Environment and Senses.
Speakers and Titles of presentations:
Professor Stephen Katz (Trent University, Ontario) - Hold On!: Gravity, ageing and the materiality of falling
Dr Christina Buse (University of York) and Professor Julia Twigg (University of Kent) -Dress as a material method for researching the experiences of people with dementia
Dr Vanessa May and Dr Camilla Lewis (University of Manchester) - The use of sensory methods in researching atmosphere and place
Dr Jennifer Tarr (London School of Economics) - Sensory and arts-based approaches to chronic pain communication
Professor Sarah Nettleton (University of York) - Making places for care: an exploration of materials and the liveliness of things in the design of residential care homes for later life
Dr Monica Degen (Brunel University London) - Sensory Cities: a think-kit to research, curate and represent the urban experiences
