Dear all (apologies for cross-posting),
Please share the following message with interested parties.
Places are still available on the MA in Music at Oxford Brookes University. This is a very flexible course drawing on the strengths of our highly respected research units in popular music (PMRU), opera (OBERTO) and sonic art (SARU).
Students can specialise in any combination of popular music, film music, nineteenth-century music and society, opera, composition or sonic art, mixing and matching modules to develop individual interests. Of particular interest to this list might be the modules taught by Dr Jan Butler and Dr Dai Griffiths of PMRU in film music and popular music. Recent MA dissertations emerging from these modules have included studies of media representations of Hole, a close reading of The Smiths' debut album, racism in early British Punk, the emergence of ‘youtube music’, the development of Horror film scoring, use of popular music in film and a study of changes in popular music journalism in the mainstream British press, 1981-88.
This is one of the only MAs in the UK to combine a rigorous academic programme with a vocational element: students on the Professional Experience Module can undertake an external work placement with an arts organisation of their choice or work with one of our research units, allowing them to explore potential future career options and gain valuable experience.
Students with interest in music from any background are welcome to apply: this is not a performance course and a first degree in music is not required. There are scholarships available: to be eligible, applicants need to have secured a place on the course by late May. Brookes alumni are entitled to an automatic 10% fee deduction.
Thank you,
Jan Butler
