italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Caro Jim
I m not sure if the information below is about the image you are referring to but it sounds like a fleuron also called 'aldus leaf' after the leading printer/publisher Aldus Manutius of the Venetian high Renaissance. Here s an excerpt from google:
" also called a “printers’ flower” is a naturalistic symbol, or glyph, that is used as an ornament for typographic compositions.....which derive their name from the Old French word “floron,” or “flower”—are specifically stylized forms of flowers or leaves, such as the image seen right. These heart-shaped leaves and stems are common fleurons that can be seen in older printed books, including as “breaks” between sections of the text". Also look up "fleuron (typography).

Subject: [I-S] Request for assistance in identifying a printer's symbol
italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Cari colleghi,
I am currently working on a project on dissident networks in
Renaissance Europe, and I need to know the meaning of a small
printer's mark or symbol which appears on the frontispieces of many of
the books published by printers affiliated with this movement. It
appears to be a small heart-shaped leaf with a curved stem coming out
of the top.
Could anyone of you perhaps identify this symbol for me, or else point
me to any sources which might be able to identify it?
Thanks very much in advance for any assistance you can give. You can
send it either to the list, or to my personal email:

Thanks a lot, e buon lavoro.

P.S. I would send an image of this symbol, but I understand that the
list owners discourage colleagues from sending this kind of attachment
to the list.
