Dear all,
the AGU reminds us that the deadline for nominations for
its awards is 15th March 2017.
For many medals, e.g. Bowie, the top award, the nominee has to be
an AGU member - so you will have to look them up in the AGU membership
directory. You as nominator need not be an AGU member, though (and if
you need an AGU member to look up the membership
status of your nominee, get in touch with me).
There are lots of medals to choose from:

List members from Africa, or who work with African collaborators,
should give thought to nominating for the "Africa Award for research
excellence in Earth or Ocean Sciences"
http://honors.agu.org/medals-awards/africa-award-research-excellence-earth-ocean-sciences/
which is for an early career scientist from the African continent
in recognition of completing significant work that shows the focus
and promise of making outstanding contributions to research in
Earth or ocean sciences.
"Early career" means within 10 years of receiving PhD. The nominee
does NOT need to be an AGU member (nor do the nominators). They
do have to be teaching and/or conducting research at an African
institution AND working on science related issues on Africa.
More details on the website.
If you are collaborating with scientists from developing nations
then you might also consider the Devendra Lal memorial medal.
This is not specifically for early-career scientists, and is not restricted
to Africa.
Finally, the AGU makes awards for science journalism in the geophysics
field. This includes documentary film-making, and is not restricted
to US-based journalists.
Don't hesitate to ask if you want to make a nomination and need help.
Regards,
Sheila Peacock,
BGA Awards Secretary.
