CFP: Conference of Irish Geographers -
Trespasses: Disruptive religious-spiritual movements and spaces
While religions and belief systems are strongly associated with institutional certitude and social stability, they can also serve as agents of disruption and change. Spiritual movements, minority denominations, and religious social activists have been among the most distinct forces to advance socio-cultural diversity and transformation in Ireland and across the world. This session intends to explore how religious-spiritual bodies, places, or individuals, both in the present and historically, have contributed to ‘disrupting’ social normativitiy. It is intended for contributions to build on recent disciplinary discussions that illustrate the complex interactions of the sacred and the profane, and the historical and contemporary socio-political influence of religions. We are eager to create participatory sessions where researchers can contribute to larger conversations while showcasing aspects of their research.
We welcome contributions that address the following themes, while not being limited to such:
• Radical or disruptive religious-spiritual movements or figures
• Historical or contemporary case studies
• Emerging or ‘alternative’ sacred or worship spaces
• Socio-political dimensions of religious identity
• Socially progressive religious associations, such as charitable bodies,
• temperance movements, savings and loans societies
• Shifting social role religious-spiritual institutions
