We are still welcoming abstracts to the session 'Innovating and Disrupting Geographical Research Methods' at the conference of Irish Geographers, May 4th to 6th 2017 held in UCC, Cork.
Call for Papers:
Research methods form a fundamental component of geographical research projects, yet geographical research methods are continuing to transform and evolve due to the increasingly complexity of a range of global issues under examination, as well as the increasing diversity of data sources and types, and methods for analysis. Recently, geographical research projects have been innovatively combining methods, adapting and advancing traditional methods and inventing novel approaches to enhance our ways of doing research and our knowledge. The volume and diversity of data available today is far beyond that obtainable to previous generations of geographers through access to big data, online sources, social media outlets, so too are the analytical tools to make sense of the data captured (e.g. GIS developments). This offers ever-growing methodological possibilities and present new challenges. Geography is transgressing as a discipline from traditionally prescribed methods to incorporate more ‘alternative’ data collection, which is shifting our understandings of the field and fieldwork, whilst bringing a rejuvenated focus to topics which historically would have been aligned with certain methodological routes. This session seeks to explore the variety of innovative and creative research methods being employed in geographical research in Ireland and beyond. This session aims to assemble papers actively engaging with discussions on methodological developments, in particular presentations that draw on (but are not limited to) methods such as photography, artistic engagements, social media studies, digital methods, discourse analysis, developments in GIS and other spatial technologies, ethnography and observation are welcomed. Speakers could discuss their deployment or use of new or alternative methodologies, how innovative methods have transformed their field of scholarly engagement, or how their methods disrupt and de-lineate traditional methodological approaches within the discipline. Expansions into innovative pedagogies in geographical education are also welcome. We particularly welcome and encourage presentations from post-graduate students.
Please send a short 250 word abstract to Rosie Howlett-Southgate ([log in to unmask]) and Therese Kenna ([log in to unmask]) by 20 March 2017. More conference details can be found here: http://www.conferenceofirishgeographers.ie/
