... that is now 'crystal' (groan ...) clear Chris!
Some additional interesting factoids about possible alternate causes here:
http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/type/mesothelioma/about/mesothelioma-risks-and-causes
But asbestos remains the single greatest proven cause since Wagner's study in the 1950's. And in the eyes of the Court, it remains an indivisible disease, that is to say if you have it, it was more than likely caused by exposure to asbestos and if exposure occurred during your employment, your employer may be liable.

Hello Steve
The first quote you used from here from here is somewhat ambiguous (to me anyways):
https://mesotheliomaresearchnews.com/2017/03/15/young-people-still-risk-mesothelioma-asbestos-exposure/
“The U.S. Centers for Diseases and Controls (CDC) reported that the number of malignant mesothelioma deaths rose from 2,479 in 1999 to 2,597 in 2015. Unsurprisingly, most of the deaths occurred in people over the age of 85, but what is surprising is that during the same time period, there were 682 cases of mesothelioma deaths in people between 25 and 44 years old."
Its ambiguous as it gives annual death rate, but not total deaths for the period, yet it then uses total deaths for the 25-44 year olds across the whole period.
It has paraphrased the quote I used from here: http://edition.cnn.com/2017/03/03/health/asbestos-mesothelioma-death-rates-study/index.html
'In those 16 years, 16,914 of the deaths were among people 75 to 84 years old. In the same period, 682 people between the ages of 25 and 44 died of mesothelioma-related problems.'
Which gives a much better view of the data, but still not the whole picture (hence my subsequent posts).
Its also interesting that the base article: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/66/wr/mm6608a3.htm?s_cid=mm6608a3_w#T1_down
Has this to say in Summary Side Bar:
"Malignant mesothelioma is a neoplasm associated with inhalation exposure to asbestos fibers and other elongate mineral particles (EMPs). "
"Continuing occurrence of malignant mesothelioma deaths in persons aged <55 years suggests ongoing inhalation exposure to asbestos fibers and possibly other causative EMPs."
So there may also be an underlying low level rate of malignant mesothelioma that could be due to other causative EMPs, in addition to asbestos.
The base paper gives a death rate estimated at <1% for 25-44 (Age-adjusted death rates per 1 million persons calculated using the 2000 Standard population.)
Cheers
