Hi,
With apologies for the somewhat long and detailed email.
We're on Learn 9.1 Q2 2016.
We have had some instances recently where staff have accidentally entered override grades in the Grade Centre. For instance a Bb Assignment's Grade Assignment screen includes two areas where tutors can enter grades (so-called 'attempt' grades and override grades). Some staff entered the marks in the wrong area (or both areas) which then means there is an override grade.
Under certain circumstances the presence of override grades seems to hinder - or prevent altogether - students' access to some forms of feedback delivered via Grade Centre. To provide a couple of examples:
Scenario 1:
* Student submits to a Blackboard Assignment
* Tutor accesses work to grade and feed back
* Tutor feeds back via the 'Feedback to User' area on the Grade Assignment screen (aka the crocodoc screen)
* An override grade is inadvertently entered at some stage of the grading process
* Marks and feedback released to student
* Student does not see the blue speech bubble icon in My Grades, thereby preventing access to tutor's feedback entered in the 'Feedback to User' box. If they know to do so however, students can click on the title of the relevant assessment task in My Grades as an alternative route to their 'Feedback to User' feedback
Scenario 2:
* Tutor creates a standard grade column
* Tutor enters grades and feedback, including feedback via the 'Feedback to User' box on the Grade Details page
* An override grade is inadvertently entered at some stage of the grading process
* Marks and feedback released to student
* Student does not see the blue speech bubble icon in My Grades, thereby preventing access to feedback entered by tutor in the 'Feedback to User' box.
Scenario 2 is obviously more serious as there is no 'back door' to access feedback provided via the 'Feedback to User' area.
As well as potentially impacting on student access to feedback, we have also seen a few cases where the override and attempt grades are different. As the override grade is not necessarily the last one entered, there is the risk of the wrong grade displaying to students.
Has anybody else had issues with staff using override grades accidentally? If so I'm interested in what steps you may have taken to identify the problem and resolve it for the future.
Any info gratefully received.
Regards,
Juliun Ryan
