EASA MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY CONFERENCE, July 5-7th, Lisbon
Call for papers / Panel 36 / Empowering the body to know: ethnographic approaches to embodied knowledge
Short abstract:
Drawn from epistemologies of bodily knowing, this panel invites ethnographies detailing the incorporation of new knowledge into the body-mind. Focusing on metaphoric or logistic moments of transition, we consider how the knowledge resident in substances or materialities comes to be enfolded into the human organism. The panel considers how persons are empowered, by virtue of successfully embodying new knowledge, to interact in new circumstances and social, environmental and political contexts.
Long abstract:
Drawn from epistemologies of bodily knowing, this panel invites ethnographies detailing the incorporation of new knowledge into the body-mind. Considering how knowledge resides in various tangible or intangible substances or materialities, and the whole human being’s interactions with these, we consider symbiotic and dialectic processes of enfolding new knowledge into the human organism. Specifically, this panel focuses on momentary bodily aperture necessary for this task, examining how the inherent risks involved in opening the self to new knowledge is managed by accompanying rites, rituals and observances. These may be metaphoric, life-cycle or logistic moments of transition: propelled by self-transformation or improvement, by the onset of adolescence, motherhood or the third age, or by forced or desired migration. The panel considers how persons are empowered, by virtue of successfully embodying new knowledge, to interact in new circumstances and social, environmental and political contexts.
