I don't think Paddy meant to suggest that the photo had been taken on
"his visit to London the day before;" I think he quoted the letter
because of its mention of "the lunch" and the Duke of Connaught,
"“Then I to my graves commission, after having writ our names in the
D. of C.’s book - a detail I had omitted since the lunch...,"
reasoning that the photo might have been taken at "the lunch," which
had evidently taken place on a previous day (always presuming that by
"the lunch" Kipling did not mean that day's lunch at the Carlton with
Uncle Stan!)
