Call for suggestions for RAS Specialist Discussion Meetings 2017-18 (Deadline 1 March 2017)
The RAS invites suggestions from Fellows of the RAS who wish to propose (and therefore organise) Specialist Discussion meetings for the academic year beginning October 2017. Meetings are held monthly from October to May, on the second Friday of the month
To help with assessment, proposals should include the following information:
- Title of meeting and organiser(s), at least one of whom should be an RAS Fellow
- The topics to be covered in the meeting
- Rationale for the meeting, including timeliness,
- Suggestions for invited speakers
- Preferred date for meeting, if any
Proposals should not exceed one A4 page in length
For information, detailed guidance for meeting organisers may be found at:
http://www.ras.org.uk/events-and-meetings/1747-general-information-about-meetings
Proposals for Astronomy SD meetings (including Exoplanets) should be sent to Mandy Bailey ([log in to unmask]) and proposals for Geophysics SD meetings (including Planetary Science and Solar-Terrestrial Physics) should be sent to Lyndsay Fletcher ([log in to unmask]).
The deadline for receipt of proposals is 1st March 2017

Building our Industrial Strategy: green paper: request for input for RAS response
Last week the UK Government published its long-awaited industrial strategy, including substantial content relating to science, technology and innovation. As the strategy takes the form of a green paper, the government is asking for comments and feedback on the proposals.
See the full document at https://beisgovuk.citizenspace.com/strategy/industrial-strategy/supporting_documents/buildingourindustrialstrategygreenpaper.pdf
The Royal Astronomical Society will put in a response to this consultation, shaped by bodies like RAS Council, and the Astronomy and Geophysics Forums. It would also be useful to hear from the wider astronomy, space science and geophysics communities.
If you have anything you think the RAS should consider in its submission, can you please send your thoughts to Robert Massey, RAS Deputy Executive Director, via [log in to unmask]

Making the case for European astronomy and space science: public and political engagement
Robert Massey, RAS Deputy Executive Director, and Anita Heward, RAS / Europlanet / Twinkle, are running a special session at the European Week of Astronomy and Space Science (EWASS) in Prague this June. The session will look at engaging the public, and political representatives, with astronomy and space science, in the light of Brexit and the lack of confidence in 'experts'.
We're seeking short papers for this session, our aim is to stimulate a lively debate, and to find a way forward for communicating our sciences.
You can see the full description of the session at http://eas.unige.ch/EWASS2017/session.jsp?id=SS2
If you're interested in coming along, or have any questions, please contact Robert Massey via [log in to unmask] or Anita Heward via [log in to unmask]

Public Lecture: Exploring the Solar System with Robots – 14th February 2017
We will focus on recent results from the Cassini spacecraft and how the spacecraft has been operated to make these discoveries. We will also look at the Juno mission to Jupiter, New Horizons at Pluto and Charon, and the Mars Curiosity Rover, and will finish with a look at the challenges for exploring the poorly-understood ice giant Uranus, and European efforts to launch a new spacecraft out to this distant object.

CALL FOR ARTICLES FOR ASTRONOMY AND GEOPHYSICS
Have you considered writing an article about your work for the Society's magazine, Astronomy and Geophysics?
The Editor is looking for news items and topical review papers, communicating advances in your field to the many interested fellows working in related areas within the RAS sciences. If you wish to write a review paper, the Editor is looking for up to 6000 words plus figures and images, discussing an aspect of science within the RAS remit. A&G does not publish original research, but rather authors should refer to key publications in the peer reviewed literature. Although a serious scientific core to articles is expected, the Editor also likes papers that engage and intrigue, as well as inform, the reader.
If you are interested in writing for A&G, please do not hesitate to contact the Editor, Dr Sue Bowler, at [log in to unmask] , or simply submit your manuscript at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/astrogeo
