I am currently curating the Col. George Montagu collections of shells in Exeter and the NHM. Between the two museums I have isolated around 90 type lots but this is far short of the number of mollusc species described by Montagu. Consequently I am looking for any other source of Montagu shells. Fred Woodward bought the shell collection of Barnstaple Museum for Birmingham Museum in 1962 and stated it contained Montagu shells. Can anyone help me verify this? If there are any other collections out there that date from 1790 to 1820 that have links to Montagu please let me know.
Associated with Montagu was Capt James Laskey, an odd fellow indeed. I will be checking out the Hunterian soon and there is a connection with Ipswich Museum but if anyone has information on him I would be glad to hear about it. He was a member of the Wernerian Society in Edinburgh and in a paper of 1807 states leaving a collection to that society. There is however no trace of it in the NMS. If the name Laskey is associated with any of your collections please contact me
Finally John Adams of Pembroke who wrote of small shells in 1797 and posthumously in 1800. He drowned while collecting in 1798. He was reputed to have a fine collection of shells. This collection has disappeared but we still use names introduced by him for some British shells. I think he was educated at Cambridge and was a fellow of the Linnean Society. I have all the data held by the Linnean but if anyone has any knowledge of him please get in touch
