Temse for sieve is quite correct. It's usually associated with flour
milling. The final operation was to sieve the flour to avoid including
grit from the grindstones. . The term "He'll never set the Thames (or
temse) on fire" derives from the fact that energetic sieving will warm
the flour due to frictional effects. Something that a lazy siever will
never accomplish.
