Comparing Health across Societies-CHASE

the 4th workshop on comparative health sociology

June 21st - 23rd 2017

After a successful workshop in Trondheim in 2015, we are pleased to invite you to CHASE, the 4th workshop on comparative health research. The main goal of the meeting is to share knowledge on theory as well as methods for comparative research in sociological epidemiology and health sociology. We want to focus on research contributing to the study of societies and social change and their consequences for population health. 



Apart from sessions organized around in-depth discussions of full high-quality papers, we plan time slots for a more informal exchange of ideas and enthusiasm. 





Format.

The workshop is limited to 25 presentations in two parallel sessions.  We foresee two formats for presentation. 

Some sessions are organized according to Walter Korpi’s rules: papers are read in advance, and introduced by a discussant; the author gets a few minutes to react to the discussant’s presentation; most of the time is preserved for general discussion. 

The remaining sessions have a more conventional format with 10-15 minutes for presentation, and 20-25 minutes for a general discussion, initiated by a discussant.

Participants.

The call is open to all, but we want to especially encourage PhD students in a more advanced stage of their research and young postdoctoral researchers. First year PhD students are welcome too when accompanied by their supervisor. 

We would greatly appreciate your contribution to this meeting. Since the format of the workshop is in-depth discussion of full papers, we kindly invite you to consider participation as a presenter and/or a discussant.



How to register?

The deadline for submission is February 28th 2017. Submissions will be send to [log in to unmask]

*Submission for participants who wish to present a paper should include:

- an extended abstract (word limit: 800 words);

- contact details of the author (name, affiliation, e-mail, postal address and telephone);

- notification whether you are willing and able to be discussant for (an) other paper(s);

- notification whether you want to participate in a conventional session, or in a session 

  according to Korpi’s rules. 

*Submission for discussants should only include contact details (name, affiliation, e-mail, postal address and telephone).



Acceptance of the abstract.

Selection is based on the quality of the abstract and acceptance will be announced before March 15th 2017. Preference will be given to papers that make a strong theoretical, methodological or empirical contribution to the field of comparative research in health sociology. 

We encourage accepted presenters to send in full papers by May 15th 2017 (APA style, word limit: 7000 words, tables and references not included) by e-mail to [log in to unmask]



Costs of registration.

The cost of registration is 250€, including coffee or tea, lunch on Thursday & Friday and a social dinner on Thursday evening (location to be determined).



Best PhD paper prize.

An award is granted to the best paper presented at the workshop. Eligible are PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who defended their dissertation in 2017. The winner of the best paper will receive a money prize and a certificate.



Further information.

The workshop starts at 13:00 on Wednesday and ends at 12:00 on Friday to allow participants to arrive on Wednesday and to depart on Friday.
