The Changing Face of the Seaside? Race, Whiteness and Identity
10 March 2017, 10.30-17.30
Sixty Eight, Middle Street, Brighton, BN1 1AL
The contemporary English seaside is, according to many observers, characterised by a range of social, cultural and political changes. But why is it changing, and what are the influences and processes that underpin these shifts? Conversely, which aspects of coastal life are more resistant to social transformation and utilise a worldview that looks back rather than forward? This workshop asks us to consider specifically the role that race and racialisation play within these developments. The Centre for Research in Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics at the University of Brighton invites you to join us for a day of discussion on pressing questions about the seaside past, present and future. The event is free but donations to a charity for refugees in Brighton, can be made on the day. The name of the charity will be confirmed nearer to the time.
