At Jisc we have both Slack and Yammer (along with Skype for business and other things with overlapping functionality). Yammer is used by far more people than Slack as far as I can tell. I think at Jisc, Slack is mainly used by the developers, at least for the Slack groups I’m part of. I’m not personally sure what all the fuss is about with Slack, but I suppose it’s helpful to have the corporate dev chatter in a corporate dev space. Maybe that’s all there is to it?
I kinda agree with Mia about lists. I did recently get a "you don’t still use email do you" comment from a colleague who is a slack user. For what’s it worth, another colleague suggested the benefits were:
* Unlimited search archives
* Guest access
* Custom user groups (for teams/departments)
* Group calls
