The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Centre for the Study of Human Rights invites you to the forthcoming panel:
Migrant Deaths at European borders: states' duties to identify and the rights of families to know
In 2016, more than 5000 migrants and refugees died in the Mediterranean, and many more went missing. Most bodies have not been identified, nor do families know the fate of missing relatives. The panel will: present the results of an ESRC funded research into the treatment of the dead in Italy and Greece, and the position of relatives in Tunisia and Turkey; review the human rights duties of states to identify the dead and respect the rights of families; and consider the rights of the dead. These are new and important issues for human rights academics and practitioners.
Speaker(s):
Dr Claire Moon, Associate Professor in the Sociology of Human Rights, LSE
Professor William Schabas, Professor of International Law, University of Middlesex
Ms Ann Singleton, Senior Research Fellow, School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol; IOM Global Migration Data Analysis Centre.

Stefanie Grant, Visiting Senior Fellow, Centre for the Study of Human Rights, LSE
Date: Wednesday 22 March 2017, 6.00 pm - 7.30pm
