New Directions in Post-medieval and Historical Archaeology in Europe
Current research on the material culture of Europe’s most recent half millennium (AD 1500-2017) is vibrant and innovative, with new applications of theory, practice and data transforming both academic and contract archaeology. This session, sponsored by the Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology, brings together researchers from across Europe to indicate the range of current projects addressing questions ranging from those at the level of a particular individual or event right up to large-scale continental and global processes. This form of archaeology is highly multi-disciplinary, bringing sciences and humanities together, and is extremely relevant to the Maastricht theme of ‘Building Bridges’. This session will provoke consideration of how the recent past affects the present, how its material culture provokes responses from and engages the public, and how this archaeological resource has variable recognition from heritage professionals across Europe. One intention of this session is to emphasise how Europe’s recent material remains deserve and require protection, investigation and interpretation across the whole continent, and can be used for positive cultural, socio-political and economic outcomes.
Best wishes,
Hilary
