YOURS IN SISTERHOOD
This presentation explores a series of my recent interconnected nonfiction moving image projects that engage the methods and questions of 1970s collaborative feminist documentary practice in order to interrogate the contemporary status of public feminism. The presentation focuses on materials and methods from my current work in progress Yours in Sisterhood, a performative, participatory documentary project based on an archive of mostly-unpublished letters to the editor of Ms. magazine (1972-80), the first mainstream feminist magazine in the US.
Irene Lusztig is a filmmaker, visual artist, and archival researcher. Her film and video work mines old images and technologies for new meanings in order to reframe, recuperate, and reanimate forgotten and neglected histories. Often beginning with rigorous research in archives, her work brings historical materials into conversation with the present day, inviting the viewer to explore historical spaces as a way of contemplating larger questions of politics, ideology, and the production of personal, collective, and national memories. Her work has been screened around the world, including at MoMA New York, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Anthology Film Archives, Pacific Film Archive, Flaherty NYC, IDFA Amsterdam, and on television in the US, Europe, and Taiwan. She teaches filmmaking at UC Santa Cruz where she is Associate Professor of Film and Digital Media. She is a current Fulbright Scholar in Portugal.
