We want your views on housing for disabled people
[image of a disabled person going through a doorway at home]<http://equalityhumanrights.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=e8b4e22e779ea4c3f17588fa4&id=f26cac60f3&e=158570e3ba>In December last year, the Commission launched a formal inquiry into the chronic lack of accessible and adaptable housing available for disabled people in Britain. The inquiry will reveal whether disabled people’s rights to live independently are being fulfilled across England, Scotland and Wales.
We are now calling for evidence and want disabled people and relevant organisations to share their experiences of housing and tenancy support provision with us. We will publish our findings and recommendations in early 2018.

Share your experiences<http://equalityhumanrights.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e8b4e22e779ea4c3f17588fa4&id=86f5a78792&e=158570e3ba>

Success in the Pimlico Plumbers case
[law cases books]<http://equalityhumanrights.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e8b4e22e779ea4c3f17588fa4&id=2bc6ea4efe&e=158570e3ba> The Court of Appeal recently ruled in favour of Gary Smith, employed by Pimlico Plumbers as an ‘independent contractor’, who claimed disability pay from the organisation after a heart attack forced him to stop working. Pimlico Plumbers employ over one hundred workers as independent contractors, while requiring them to wear a uniform and drive branded vehicles, giving the impression they are permanent employees.
This is a very important step toward protecting the rights of workers in the ‘gig economy’. It will help workers who are incorrectly described as contractors, and stop companies from avoiding their duty to provide them with support.

Being disabled in Britain - a journey less equal
[blind man crossing the road] Next month the Commission will publish its ‘state of the nation’ review of what life is like for disabled people in Britain. The report covers the core areas of life such as education and work, and looks at the experiences of those with different health conditions. It will outline the key challenges that many people still face, and call on relevant organisations to work with us to identify and implement solutions.

High Court rules young asylum seekers must be properly housed
In S v London Borough of Croydon, Croydon Council disputed a young asylum seeker’s claim to be an unaccompanied minor from Iraq. They placed him in adult accommodation, stating that they did not have a duty to put him in child-appropriate housing until he was assessed and confirmed to be a child. The Commission, who intervened in this case, welcome the High Court ruling that those claiming asylum as children should be housed as such until the completion of a legal age assessment.

Practical advice on human rights for managers
[publication cover- business woman talking]<http://equalityhumanrights.us3.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=e8b4e22e779ea4c3f17588fa4&id=069ac39e47&e=158570e3ba>

Our new guide sets out seven steps that managers can take to ensure that their companies respect human rights in their day-to-day operations. It is particularly relevant for those responsible for social issues, human resources, customer and community relations, and advising the board. The steps show how to identify, mitigate and report on the impacts of business activities on people’s human rights. <http://equalityhumanrights.us3.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=e8b4e22e779ea4c3f17588fa4&id=6060781069&e=158570e3ba>

Delivering the Prevent duty and respecting free speech

We have published a short and simple guide for higher education providers in England to help them fulfil their duty to identify and address extremism while taking the Public Sector Equality Duty and the right to free speech into account. The guide will be especially useful for governors and Prevent leads.

A glimpse behind the scenes: how do we monitor equality and human rights?

Our Head of Research, Verena Braehler, discusses the new measurement framework we are developing to inform our work on equality and human rights in the coming years. This will tell us what areas of life we should look at, what we should measure and how we should measure it. Importantly, it will also give an indication of the kind of Britain we are striving towards – one in which our rights to fairness, dignity and respect are protected.
We are consulting with experts on the topics and indicators we will monitor in the future. If you would like to get involved or have any questions, email us at [log in to unmask]
