Hi Emily,
I think a lot of great examples have already been shared. This one is less detailed/specific, but sometimes when I have an audience just beginning to learn about RDM and data sharing I use the example of "repeat photography", e.g. historical and current pictures of glaciers. The NSDIC has a great collection (https://nsidc.org/data/docs/noaa/g00472_glacier_photos/index.html#repeat_photography). This helps to get across the point that data can be re-used in different contexts/for different purposes in the future than originally intended. (The original photographs were most likely not taken to document climate change, but they can now be used to this end).
All best
Jonas

Subject: Good examples of research data re-use
Hi all,
I don't usually post on here, but I've got to run a workshop about RDM for
academics next week and I could do with a bit of quick advice....
Does anyone know of any good examples of where research data has been
shared and reused?
I understand that this is probably a really basic question!! But I'm after
just a few examples that kind of capture people's imagination and make it
really clear why sharing research data is a good thing.
Thanks,
Emily

Hi Emily
We recently conducted a study at Maynooth University where we combined qualitative social science data from two archived collections to examine the changing shape of the Irish family over 100 years. By combining two archived datasets we were able to create a very large qualitative dataset of four birth cohorts that spanned the 20th C – resulting in 216 qualitative interviews (which would have been very long and difficult to gather from scratch). The research compliments a lot of pre-existing survey research on family change through the 20th and 21st Centuries.
The book was published last year – more here: https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/iqda/family-rhythms
All the best
Ruth

If you check the Case study filter on the left, you can also choose if you are interested in research or teaching cases, or both.

Dear All,
Sharing with you some good news (many of you expressed their interest in our
experimental pilot project a while back). We have just started the Open
Research Pilot Project (in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust).
It's a two year Pilot and during this time we will be working together with
four research groups committed to work openly. We will be publishing our
findings regularly.
The first blog post about the Pilot is here:
https://unlockingresearch.blog.lib.cam.ac.uk/?p=1296 - we're talking about
the call, the rationale and aims of the project and we are also introducing
our participants.
We've also created a mini-webpage (to be expanded) for the Pilot:
http://osc.cam.ac.uk/open-research/wellcome-trust-open-research-pilot
As always - feedback and questions much appreciated.
With best wishes,
Marta

If you’re interested in survey data in SPSS format, UKDS is a good source. There are some examples on my site of introductions to, and (sometimes quite critical) commentaries on, the SPSS files distributed by UKDS for major UK surveys.
