Apparently, this was an international problem. We too had 504 gateway timeout problems in the US last week with Science Direct. Ours was resolved late in the day on Friday. It is a problem at Elsevier's end -- keep on them like a pit bull, they will fix it!

Hi Rachel,
It is taking an age to authenticate via Shibboleth. I think I should change the ReturnURL to HTTPS on the WAYFless URL and the EZproxy link, for example:
https://auth.elsevier.com/ShibAuth/institutionLogin?entityID=https%3A%2F%<yourentityID>&appReturnURL=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com
https://login.ezproxy.yourdomain.ac.uk/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/
The connection is still not showing as secure because I imagine the image files are being served via HTTP.
I already have the HTTPS host configured on our EZproxy stanza. Do you have it on your WAM table?
Kind regards,

Subject: [lis-e-resources] Science Direct authentication/https issues? WAM proxy and Shib
Hi,
We've noticed today that Science Direct is not working with our WAM proxy at all, is anyone else getting this? It's something to do with https, I'm sure, but it's not security messages this time, it's giving "504 Gateway Timeout The proxied resource, www.sciencedirect.com<http://www.sciencedirect.com> is not responding." I've implemented the usual fix for https resources, but this failed to make any difference.
Access via Shibboleth, which we use as an alternative, isn't working properly either. Initial login to the main site is fine, but as soon as I do a search I get "The information you have entered on this page will be sent over an insecure connection and could be read by a third party. Are you sure you want to send this information?" - when I click continue, I get redirected through sdauth.sciencedirect.com, and directed back to the homepage instead of the results, http://www.sciencedirect.com/, not the https version!
I have raised with Elsevier and Innovative, but I wondered if anyone else was having the same issues?
Regards,
Rachel

Is this because of the SHA-1 encryption in certificates?:
https://security.googleblog.com/2016/11/sha-1-certificates-in-chrome.html
I thought Google announced this initially way back in 2014?
There's been plenty of time/notice for Proquest to upgrade their certificate!

Hello all,
Yesterday all our MyIlibrary ebooks started displaying a security error message when accessed on Chrome.
“Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information from shib.ingramdigital.com (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards), NET:ERR_CERT_WEAK_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHIM”
According to Proquest, this is due to some authentication changes Google made recently that means if a site doesn’t have certain certificates, it throws up this warning. You can get round it by clicking Advanced and continue but obviously this is less than ideal as a lot of readers get stuck at the slightly scary looking warning page.
Proquest say they will not be making any further changes to their certificates as they are upgrading to a new platform (Ebook Central). However this leaves a large portion of our ebooks not working correctly on one of the most popular browsers. We also use this browser to order, quality check and other ebook related tasks.
Having had bad experiences when Proquest migrated the EBL and Ebrary books to the Ebook Central platform, we are not eager to rush them to make this step. Neither are we particularly pleased at having all the ebooks we bought through them, not work on one browser.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you found any solutions or received any compensation?
Many thanks,
Hannah

Subject: [lis-e-resources] Book Purchasing Ratios
Good Morning Everyone,
I am currently writing with colleagues a new Collection Development and Management Policy. One of the areas of discussion is book purchasing ratios, which I would like to introduce but some colleagues are not sure about. Our budget has been reduced considerably over the last 3 years and I see this as a way to constrain spending. Other colleagues are concerned that this would use up our bookfund, as I also want to go to reading list driven zero budgeting. There are also worries about how we would clearly articulate our ratios to academic colleagues.
Would anybody be willing to share their book purchasing ratios, off-list if preferred, as well as experiences with respect to budget abd communicating to staff.
Also, has anybody got any other approaches they would be willing to share, e.g. have you thought about ratios and decided against.
Many thanks in advance.
Regards
Vicki

Subject: Registration now open for ‘Procuring Digital Preservation’ in Edinburgh, 21st March 2017
In response to enormous demand, registration has opened today for the DPC’s ‘Procuring Digital Preservation – A Briefing’ event, which is to be held at the National Records of Scotland, New Register House on Tuesday 21st March.
The Digital Preservation Coalition is delighted to host a briefing day that will explore themes related to procuring and implementing digital preservation solutions within complicated organisations, illustrated with case studies from members and the practical experience of solution providers.
“Selecting and deploying solutions is challenging enough in well-established business processes,” explains Executive Director of the DPC, William Kilbride, “but where the processes are new, or where the available resource to support procurement is stretched, moving from project to ‘business as usual’ can be hard and a complicated procurement process is bound to cause delays and confusion.”
This day-long session will provide a neutral forum where those involved in procuring digital preservation solutions can talk directly and without prejudice about the challenges they face. The dialogue that results aims to clarify the process of requirements gathering and lower the barriers to effective procurement.
Registration is free for DPC members, and cost £275.00 for non-members. Places are strictly limited and should be booked in advance. Registration will close one week before the event and early booking is recommended as we expect it to be popular.

Subject: Re: [lis-e-resources] MyIlibrary books not working in Chrome
Hello all,
Yesterday all our MyIlibrary ebooks started displaying a security error message when accessed on Chrome.
Many thanks,
Hannah

Bloomsbury Fashion Central wins 2017 IPG Ingram Content Group Digital Publishing Award
We are excited to announce Bloomsbury's win at the 2017 IPG Awards for the Ingram Content Group Digital Publishing Award. The IPG awards dinner recognizes excellence in independent publishing. According to the official announcement:
"Bloomsbury Publishing wins the Digital Publishing Award for work on Fashion Central, its new portal of content for higher education that builds on the Berg Fashion Library. It combines subscription and rental models and serves both instruction and research needs from a seamless, integrated platform. 'Bloomsbury has got a clear sense of its audience segments and how the platform can deliver for them,' judges said. 'It's a global play with thinking outside of the box.'"
Kathryn Earle, Bloomsbury's Managing Director for Digital Resources, commented: "We're absolutely thrilled to have won this award, especially against such stiff competition. We're grateful to the judges, the IPG and Ingram for underscoring through the award itself how integral digital publishing is to our industry, and it goes without saying that we are very proud to be this year's recipient."
This continues Bloomsbury Fashion Central's award-winning year. Recent awards include the FutureBook award for Platform of the Year in the Reference/Education category and Berg Fashion Library's Charleston Advisor Reader's Choice award for Most Improved Product.
